Microsoft is adding an AI chatbot to the Windows Terminal application powered by GitHub Copilot.

The GitHub Copilot chat experience will be rolling out to Windows Terminal in the near future. Windows Insiders, Windows 11 beta testers, can use it to get started first. Using GitHub Copilot, users can enable AI to suggest commands, explain errors, and take actions in the terminal.

The Terminal app made a surprising comeback in Windows 10 in 2019. Two years later, it became the default in Windows 11. New features have been added over the years, including tabs, colorful themes, and GPU-based text rendering and emojis.

The AI in GitHub Copilot allows developers to test tools like the WinDbg debugger, a tool for debugging user-mode applications, drivers, and Windows itself. IT admins also love using the tool to analyze blue screen alerts.

To get started with the latest version of Windows Terminal, you first need access to GitHub Copilot Chat. Once that’s ok and you’re a Windows Insider, you can start experimenting.

At the Build developer conference yesterday, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will also receive a Copilot AI assistant. At the same time, the software giant taps into the entire ecosystem through plugin support and is now ChatGPT’s default search engine.
