Bots make up almost half of the world’s internet traffic

In 2019, people generated 68.2% of all network traffic themselves. Since then, this indicator has been steadily declining.

some statistics

2021 data, 57.7 percent Human presence in internet traffic and in 2022 only 52.6 percent. At the same time, the total traffic has not decreased – on the contrary, it is increasing, which requires enormous energy consumption and computing power.

Who accounts for almost half of Internet traffic today? The answer is simple – these are bots, specialized software that mostly does not create content, but serves another purpose – monitoring, data collection, analysis, etc.

Usually bots are divided into “bad” and “neutral” because by definition there is no “good”. In the best case, no direct harm will come from the actions of the bot, but it still consumes resources and creates obstacles in the operation of sites when it monitors their activity or indexes their content.

“Bad” bots are in high demand today. They are technically more complex and more advanced than the neutral versions. For example, in 2022 51.2 percent of all bots were in the “bad” category and while it has a complex structure, the average level was only 15.4 percent. Everything else was the simplest unbiased web programs. “Bad” bots are used to conduct cyber attacks, steal data, spy on sites and users, disinformation, and other malicious purposes. There are no signs that this trend will change.
