Are you one of those people who have been wanting to buy a TV with OLED technology for a long time, but are deterred by its high price compared to models with LED panels? It’s normal, today it is possible to find real bargains. Without going any further, in our Red Friday this week, published a few hours ago, you can find a spectacular 50-inch Samsung Crystal UHD with 4K resolution and HDR 10+ for less than 400 euros. However, if we are talking about OLED TVs, practically only offers allow us to find models under 1,000 euroswith a few exceptions.

Its prices have obviously come down a lot compared to those at the beginning of the last decade, when its prices started at $9,000 and reached at least five figures. As we told you back then, around ten years ago, its price drop was expected to be quite slow, which has been confirmed over the years, unfortunately for those who know the big difference between OLED and LED, differences that increase with the development in the production of organic led panels.

I’m not saying that OLED is better than LED in every way. Proponents of the latter always focus on the fact that LEDs (and especially its evolutions such as QLED) provide much more brightness, which makes them more comfortable in high-light environments. However, if we put the advantages of one and the other on a scale, it seems indisputable that OLED wins the game, except for what I mentioned at the beginning, i.e. the price.

However, good times seem to be coming in this regard, and a report from Display Supply Chain Consultants states that the price of OLED TVs will drop significantly in 2023 and 2024. According to his forecasts, and we must take into account that his knowledge of the display market is first-class, the production price of LG’s 55-inch white OLED panel will decrease by approximately 20% during the last months of 2023, during which one must add another expected decrease of 20% for next year. Of course, the panel is not the only part of the TVs, so this does not mean that by the end of 2024 OLED TVs will cost 40% less than today, but we are still talking about a significant drop in price, between 20% and 30%.

The prices of other even more advanced technologies will decrease. A prime example of this can be found in QD-OLEDthis exclusivity from Samsung which, thanks to the use of quantum dots, can provide a brightness similar to or even higher than that of LEDs, but with the advantages of OLED, such as pure black thanks to the complete shutdown of LED. In this case, the cumulative decline in 2023 and 2024 is estimated to be around 30%which may not so much mean a drop in price at the top of the range (hopefully as well), but rather that this technology reaches more high-end models, slightly cheaper than flagship.
