Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun told local media that the shooting was due to a standoff between rival biker gangs and imposed a nighttime curfew.
Without giving details of what happened on Saturday afternoon, New Mexico State Police, which had previously reported two dead and six injured, raised the death toll to three early Sunday morning and said five injured were hospitalized.
Police have not yet announced arrests.

The New Mexico Police reported that Additional officers were sent to Red River to investigate the shooting. and asked people to refrain from traveling to the city of about 500 people, although security is no longer in danger, according to a message published in Twitter.
Eyewitnesses told the TV channel KOB 4 that after the shooting the police closed all the bars and restaurants on the main street of the Red Rivera city near Albuquerque, and numerous ambulances and police began arriving in the area.
One of the wounded was airlifted to Denver hospital, in the neighboring state of Colorado.
New Mexico hospitals where the wounded are admitted were equipped with security enhancements, without giving reasons, according to the state police.
The annual Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally, held for 41 years during Memorial Day long weekend (last Monday in May), unites thousands of motorcyclists in this mountain town.
“What happened is very tragic. but the police work was incredible. The first state police officer was there within 30 seconds,” Calhoun said.
