Right wins Spanish local elections

Spain’s ruling Socialist Party was heavily defeated by opposition conservatives in local elections this Sunday, with almost 95% of the vote counted, showing its electoral vulnerability before year-end general elections.

Only three of the 12 regions in which elections were held will remain very narrowly dominated by socialists, with the rest likely to become conservative. People’s Partyalbeit with coalitions or informal support agreements with the far-right Vox party.

The map is completely changing and suggests Alberto Nunez Feijoo awardthe new leader of the PP, before the elections at the end of the year, said Ignacio Jurado, professor of political science at the Carlos III University.

The successes of the People’s Party (PP) indicate that the conservatives may overthrow the current leftist coalition led by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) if they repeat the results of the national elections in December.

The figures showed little clear majority, with the exception of the Community of Madrid, where the regional president, Isabelle Diaz Ayuso of the PP likely won re-election with an absolute majority..

The main failures of the socialists were in the areas of Valencia, Aragon and the Balearic Islands, as well as in one of the most important strongholds of the socialists: Estremadura.

In major cities such as Valencia and Seville, where mayors were also elected, recalculation stopped at PPwhich also received an absolute majority in the city of Madrid.

Barcelona has been an exception among major cities: the pro-independence party won the majority by such a slim margin that it would need a deal with the Socialists to remove the current mayor, the leftist Adu Colau.

The campaign has been marked by controversy ranging from allegations of electoral fraud in small towns to an unprecedented case of kidnapping.

The recount showed a return to a two-party system dominated by the PSOE and PP, after a decade of increased participation by smaller parties such as the left-wing Podemos and the centrist Ciudadanos, which appear to have largely lost their seats to the PP. (Reuters).
