A 15 years was accused this Monday of setting fire to a school in Guyana last week, in which 19 people died.

Eighteen girls, mostly indigenous, and a five-year-old boy were killed in a building fire in downtown Mahdia. The girl started a fire after they confiscate the phoneaccording to the police.

The girl is being held at the Guyana Juvenile Detention Center and the charges against her were formalized during a virtual magistrates’ court hearing.

In the early morning of May 22, students woke up screaming and saw fire and smoke in the dorm bathroom, police said in a statement.

Fourteen victims died inside building during a fire, while others five died in that Mahdia Hospital from severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Near 30 minors hospitalizedwhile two critically ill girls were airlifted to New York on Saturday for further medical attention.

Authorities identified 13 victims through DNA testing, and their remains were returned to their families for burial.

The residence’s fire alarm system and school fire drills are being tested, Guyana’s Education Minister Priya Manikchand said.
