Specialized court of San Salvador sentenced former president to 14 years in prison Mauricio Funes for a truce agreed with the gangs.

In addition, the former Minister of Justice and Security, David Victoriano Munguia Payes, was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

“To sentence him to eight years in prison for the crime of illegal groups and to six years in prison for the crime of dereliction of duty,” said the verdict of the specialized judge in the Funes case, reported by El Mundo, a Salvadoran newspaper.

Munguia was sentenced to eight years in prison for illegal groups, six years for dereliction of duty, and another four years for committing arbitrary acts.

The judge bases his decision on witness, expert and documentary evidence, which he called useful, relevant and legal, and which proves the commission of the crimes for which the defendants are convicted.

The two political leaders knew and controlled the illegal activities that were carried out under agreements with gangs Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha MS13 during 2011 and 2013, includes a sentence.
