North Korea to launch its first military spy satellite in June

North Korea will launch its first defensive reconnaissance satellite in June in order to continuously monitor US military activities, state news service KCNA reported Tuesday.

In a statement, Ri Pyong-chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Military Council, said the joint US-South Korean military exercise openly demonstrated their “reckless pursuit of aggression.”

South Korean and U.S. forces last week began a live-fire exercise simulating North Korea’s “large-scale attack” in the largest maneuver of its kind to demonstrate “overwhelming” military potential in the face of threats from the north.

A North Korean official said that in order to conduct the exercise, Pyongyang must have “capacity capable of collecting information about enemy military activities in real time.”

The statement did not give an exact launch date, but North Korea notified Japan that the device will be sent into space between May 31 and June 11, leading to Tokyo puts its ballistic missile defenses on alert.

Nuclear-armed North Korea says it has completed construction of its first military spy satellite, and leader Kim Jong-un has approved final launch preparations.

Japan has warned it will shoot down any devices that threaten its territory, saying a possible North Korean missile launch would be a serious violation of UN Security Council resolutions. (Reuters).
