Serbia publicly demonstrated the anti-aircraft missile system recently launched by China. This has raised fears in some of Serbia’s neighbors that armament in the Balkans could threaten peace in the region.
The HQ-22 anti-aircraft system, or Huntsi-22, was recently delivered by a dozen Chinese People’s Liberation Army Y-20 transport aircraft. Chinese weapons are thought to be the largest air shipments to Europe in history.
Although Serbia has officially applied for membership in the European Union, it is heavily armed with Russian and Chinese weapons, including T-72 battle tanks, MiG-29 fighters, Mi-35 attack helicopters and drones, according to Defense News. .
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the Chinese system, like other recently delivered military equipment, poses no threat to anyone, just a “strong deterrent”.
