Nvidia Corp. said it has built Israel’s most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer to meet the growing demand for applications using such cutting-edge technologies.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.
The world’s most expensive chipmaker, Nvidia, said the cloud system will cost hundreds of millions of dollars and be partially operational by the end of 2023.
Gilad Scheiner, the company’s senior vice president, said that Nvidia is working with 800 startups and tens of thousands of software engineers in Israel.
Dubbed Israel-1, the system is expected to deliver up to eight exaflops of AI computing performance, making it one of the fastest AI supercomputers in the world. It is noted that an exaflop can do one quintillion calculations per second.
Scheiner emphasized that AI is “the most important technology in our lives” and that productive AI development and implementation requires large graphics processing units (GPUs). He also said that companies in Israel “will have access to a supercomputer they don’t have today.”
“This system is essentially a large-scale system that will allow them to train much faster, build frameworks, and come up with solutions that can solve more complex problems.”
For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was built using thousands of Nvidia GPUs.
The system was developed by a former Mellanox team. Nvidia acquired Israeli chipmaker Mellanox Technologies in 2019 for approximately $7 billion, surpassing Intel Corp.
Scheiner said that Nvidia’s top priority for the supercomputer is Israeli partners.
“We can use this system to work with partners outside of Israel in the future,” he said.
As Ukrinform reports, Israel is trying to use its technological achievements to become a “superpower” in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). and for military purposes.
