Telenet and Fluvius have received the blessing of the European Commission to lay fiber optic networks together. This means that both parties can finally start building the “network of the future”.
Telenet published the agreement with Fluvius on July 19, 2022. With the help of the Belgian network operator, Telenet wanted to start expanding fast fiber optic networks in Flanders and Brussels and put Proximus to the test. The European Commission initially wanted to deal with the matter. Telenet announces in a press release that it has received the green light to start infrastructure work.
Both parties form a new company called “NetCo”. Two-thirds of this company is owned by Telenet, and Fluvius manages the remaining share. Micha Berger, currently Director of Special Projects at Telenet, will be honored to call himself NetCo’s first CEO. The remaining paperwork must be completed by July 1, 2023, the telecom operator’s press release said.
The ambitions of the project are big. Telenet wants to provide 78 percent of all households in Flanders and parts of Brussels with fiber optic Internet at speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s. An investment that should amount to up to two billion euros. Telenet and Fluvius are providing all of the financing themselves without having to resort to external investors. In addition to Telenet, partners such as Orange can also use the network to support their customers.
“I am very pleased that the European Commission has given us the green light to build the network of the future together with Fluvius. Our networks already consist of 90 percent glass fiber. Thanks to this cooperation, we will soon be able to expand fiber optics where it is needed, down to the last kilometer. This approval gives new impetus to the economy and will allow our region to get everyone on the digital highway,” said John Porter, CEO of Telenet.
While the European Commission has given its blessing, NetCo has other legal issues to resolve. Rival Proximus threatens to go before the Council of State to undermine the agreement. After all, Proximus itself invested several billion euros in the installation of fiber optics. Since not a word is wasted on this in the press release, Telenet does not seem to have any concerns in this regard.
