Earlier this year, astronomers discovered a semi-moon, or “false moon,” orbiting the Earth. However, a closer look reveals that the moon, which is actually just an asteroid named 2023 FW13, has never orbited Earth. It actually revolves around the Sun. Although it has no gravitational connection to our planet, the semi-Earth moon sits very close to the planet, and some believe it could even be useful for launching deep space missions in the future. This is because its relative proximity to Earth and low gravity will make it easier for the spacecraft to leave it behind and launch into the unknown darkness of space.

At the very least, Earth’s fake moon would make a great testing ground for deep space missions, as it would only take a few months for astronauts to reach an asteroid from our planet. From this moment, the possibilities open up by NASA employees or any other space agency.

The search for Earth’s second satellite has been going on for decades, no doubt partly due to the discovery of new moons orbiting Saturn and Jupiter. While our little planet will never have moons on the same level as any of these Solar System symbols, finding a semi-moon will at least help make our planet a little more special than it already is.
