Firefox no longer receives updates on older versions of Windows

Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will no longer receive new versions of Firefox starting next month. Security updates will continue for another year.

Firefox 115 will be the last new version of the browser for Windows users sticking to Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Mozilla announces this. Although Microsoft no longer supports these outdated Windows editions, they are still in use. This was the result of a survey among our readers. Support for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome dropped earlier.

Critical Updates

After the release of version 115, Mozilla will continue to provide critical security updates through its Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) channel. Dangerous leaks are thus closed until September 2024. From then on, the updates will stop completely.

Anyone who uses Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 today exposes themselves to unnecessary risks. Without security updates, operating systems are vulnerable to hackers and malware. It’s a time-consuming and costly task for Firefox to continue supporting an outdated operating system. The end of the updates comes as no surprise.

time for an upgrade

Does this news worry you? Then you might consider upgrading to a new version of Windows or another operating system as soon as possible. Windows 10 is still available and doesn’t have the same strict system requirements as Windows 11. Your favorite browser and other software will run safely on this operating system for quite a while.
