The confusion began when a faulty electronic cigarette exploded in the upper compartment of the plane belonging to one of the passengers. Shortly thereafter, smoke began to spread throughout the cabin, causing flight attendants to discover two suitcases on fire.
Faced with the situation, several passengers acted courageously and tried to put out the fire with their own hands. Thanks to quick intervention, the incident was brought under control, but as a precaution the plane had to return to Geneva.
The plane landed safely at the airport of the city, where it was promptly received by emergency services responsible for landing and inspecting the aircraft. Fortunately, no passengers were reported injured in the incident.
The investigation has already begun
Shortly after the incident, the Swiss authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. After analysis and testing, it was concluded that the cause of the fire was “thermal runaway” resulting from the failure of the battery of an e-cigarette that was packed in one of the bags present in the luggage. EasyJet said the 191 passengers injured in the incident were transferred to another flight and finally arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam the next day.

It is important to emphasize that the instructions provided to passengers allow e-cigarettes to be carried in carry-on baggage, provided that no more than two batteries are used and they are not stored in compartments. However, this incident draws attention to the need for extra care and precautions when handling these devices.
Safety on board aircraft is a priority and passengers are advised to strictly follow the rules set by the airlines and aviation authorities. If you have questions about the carriage of certain items, it is recommended that you contact the airline prior to travel for clear and up-to-date instructions.
This incident serves as a wake-up call to the importance of due diligence and compliance with the relevant regulations to ensure the safety of everyone involved in air travel.
