Apple has updated usage data for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 devices on its developer site. According to recent data, iOS 16 is currently running on 90% of active iPhone models released in the last four years. This is followed by iOS 15 with 8% and older versions of the software, which takes the remaining device share.
On the other hand, if you factor in all active iPhones, the iOS 16 update works on 81% of devices, which is 28% more than the iOS 16 usage data Apple released earlier this year. For reference, Apple collects usage data based on devices transacting in the App Store.
Speaking of iPads, iPadOS 16 software now works on 76% of all devices released in the last four years. Meanwhile, 71% of all active iPad models are running iPadOS 16, up 21% from last year’s figures.
When it comes to implementing the latest software, Apple devices stay several steps ahead of Android, especially due to the close integration of the Apple ecosystem. For example, according to data released in April this year, Google’s Android 11 R version has the largest share of devices among all versions.
Currently, the latest stable versions of iOS and iPadOS are iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 released last month. The device usage data comes just days before WWDC 2023, when Apple will announce the next big software updates, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. In the meantime, you can check out the new WWDC23 Power Up playlist.
Among the various features, iOS 17 is expected to bring side-by-side app installation to the iPhone, along with redesigned system apps and lock screen turn-by-turn navigation. However, the sideloading feature is said to be limited to the European region only. Apple is expected to customize the iOS 16 lock screen for iPad in the next major update. However, the information was provided by a newly deleted Twitter account. Source
