The heir to the Jordanian throne was married in the midst of a glitzy ceremony attended by leaders of the country, region and around the world.

Prince Hussein, 28, who was named heir by his father King Abdullah in 2009, married a Saudi architect. Rajwa Al Saif, 29coming from a prominent family associated with the ruling dynasty of his country.

Jordan has relied on Western support to shore up its economy, being one of the world’s largest per capita recipients of US and European aid, and observers hope the wedding will also bring it closer to a regional power plant on its southern border.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was supposed to attend, did not attend, according to Jordanian officials. But the banquet tables were filled with European and Asian royalty, as well as high-profile American figures, including United States First Lady Jill Biden and the US Prince and Princess. Prince Mohammed last visited Jordan a year ago after years of tension, which also raised hopes that warmer relations will open up more comprehensive economic support.
