Motorola just announced a new generation of foldable phones in China, including the Razr 40 Ultra and the more affordable Razr 40. The former draws attention with its large 3.6-inch external display and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, while the latter features the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC and 1.5 inch smaller screen.
The main feature of the Moto Razr 40 Ultra is 3.6 inch external screen, the largest screen coverage in a folding clamshell to date. It has a 10-bit AMOLED panel with 1066 x 1056 pixels resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and Victus Gorilla Glass for protection.
The user can do anything on the title screen: watch a YouTube video, get navigation information on Google Maps, or reply to emails without maximizing the main screen. The 32MP front camera is built into the top of the display, and there is a fingerprint scanner on the side.
The Razr 40 Ultra features a 6.69-inch AMOLED LTPO FHD+ main display with a 165Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support and a maximum brightness of 1400 nits. The teardrop hinge design ensures there is no gap when closing the device.
The frame of the Razr 40 Ultra is crafted from 7000-series aluminum, while the back is covered in Gorilla Glass Victus Infinite Black and Glacier Blue and vegan Viva Magenta leather. The phone is very thin, only 6.99 mm when unfolded and weighs 188 grams. It also has an IP52 water repellent finish.
In an effort to increase durability and strength, Motorola has reduced the number of hinge components to 85. 12MP main camera (f/1.5, 1.4µm raw pixels) with OIS and 13MP ultra wide-angle module (f/2.2, 1 .12 µm pixels) that also works as a macro camera.
The software is based on Android 13 with Moto MyUX interface and Ready For Desktop interface when connected to an external monitor. The Razr 40 Ultra packs a 3800mAh battery with support for 30W wired charging and up to 5W wireless charging. It is available in Infinite Black, Glacier Blue and Viva Magenta.
Prices in China start at 5,699 Yuan ($801) for the 8/256GB model and go up to 6,399 Yuan ($900) for the 12/512GB version. Sales will start in China on June 5.
Moto Razr 40
On the other hand, the Razr 40 features a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED screen with FHD+ resolution and a slightly reduced refresh rate of 144Hz. The 1.5-inch (194 x 368 pixels) screen cover offers basic notification controls and can be used as a camera viewfinder.
The Razr 40 retains the 7000 series aluminum frame and the Razr 40 Ultra’s IP52 water repellency, but is slightly thicker (7.35mm unfolded and 15.8mm folded). The main camera has a resolution of 64 MP (f / 1.7, pixels 0.7 microns) with optical image stabilization, as well as a 13 MP ultra-wide sensor (f / 2.2, pixels 1.12 microns). The front camera remains limited to 32 MP.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor is at the helm of the Razr 40, assisted by 8/12GB of RAM and 128/256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The device packs a larger 4200mAh battery with the same 30W fast wired charging and up to 5W wireless charging. The Moto Razr 40 is available in Sage Green, Vanilla Cream, and Summer Lilac.
The price in China is 3,999 Yuan ($562) for the base 8/128GB model and 4,699 Yuan ($660) for the 12/256GB model. The Razr 40 will go on sale starting June 25th.
