The European Space Agency’s (ESA) automated interplanetary station Mars Express showed a photograph of Mars dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the probe’s launch. As reported by Ukrinform,
As reported by Ukrinform, this is stated in the ESA press release.
The image mosaic was created using data from the Mars Express High Definition Stereo Camera (HRSC).
HRSC normally photographs the Martian surface from an altitude of about 300 km – where the spacecraft will be closest to Mars in its elliptical orbit.
But the mosaic photo presented here uses a slightly different approach.
To get a wider view of the planet, HRSC collected 90 images at high altitudes (between 4,000 and 10,000 km), thus capturing areas about 2,500 km wide. These images were then combined to create a complete spherical view of the Red Planet.
Such large-scale images are often acquired to observe weather conditions on Mars, but they provide excellent images of the planet’s surface even in the absence of atmospheric events.
Mars Express was launched into space on June 2, 2003.
As reported by Ukrinform, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Curiosity rover has already traveled 30 km in Gale Crater on the Red Planet.
