Apple reveals usage statistics for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will kick off on June 5. The company is expected to announce next-generation software versions for iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10 and more. Before the event, the Cupertino-based technology giant shared iOS 16 usage statistics, measured by devices trading in the app store on May 30, 2023.

81% of iPhones and 76% of iPads use iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 respectively

Apple generally supports software updates for five years after devices are released. The company announced that iOS 16, which was released last September, works on 81 percent of iPhones worldwide. When you consider the iPhones released in the last four years, from the iPhone 11 series to the iPhone 14 series, this number rises to 90 percent.

Of the remaining 19 percent, 13 percent of iPhone users have not updated to iOS 15, and 6 percent are running iOS 14 or earlier. For those who don’t know, iOS 16 is still compatible with the iPhone 8 and newer models released in 2017 or later.

On the tablet side, Apple reports that 71 percent of all iPads run iPadOS 16, and that number jumps to 76 percent when considering tablets released in just the last four years. However, 18 percent of these devices are still stuck on iPadOS 15 and 6 percent are still stuck on previous versions. The report adds that 20 percent of all iPads are running iOS 15, and 9 percent are users using iPadOS 14 or later.

It will be interesting to see how they stack up against iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 scheduled to be announced in the coming days and expected to be released later this year.
