Siri Says Goodbye to “Hello” in iOS 17

We’re just over 24 hours away from the start of WWDC 2023, an event that promises to be packed with announcements and Siri could be a bit more expressive than originally expected. Of course, Apple’s voice assistant will not be among the stars of today, although we hope that its “home”, the operating systems of those from Cupertino, will have a meeting for developers at the launch event. If you don’t already know what’s in store for us tomorrow afternoon, we’ll tell you right here.

Like I said, Siri isn’t on the big protagonist list, even though she is a technology in which everything indicates that Apple wants to focus, in response to a huge wave of new AI-related services. We already told you a few weeks ago that Apple has started several recruitment processes for AI experts, a more realistic position than the triumphalism it showed at the beginning of the year at an internal event where, according to leaks, it said it was leading the way in the field of artificial intelligence.

Siri has actually been around for years. one of Apple’s pioneers in the field of artificial intelligenceAlthough it was widely mentioned and considered in its early days, today it is barely factored into the list of Cupertino’s assets in the area. Which again brings us to the fact that users generally consider Apple to be far behind other tech companies when it comes to AI.

Be that as it may, in Cupertino they attach great importance to their voice assistant, both in terms of its capabilities and in terms of the very important factor that has always been for Apple, usability and user experience. As we told you at the end of last year, they were already working on making it easier to summon the voice assistantreplacing the current “Hey Siri” with simply “Siri”, a change that at the time pointed to 2024.

Siri Says Goodbye to "Hello" in iOS 17

However, according to popular analyst Mark Gurman With iOS 17, Apple will say goodbye to “Hello” in the “Hello Siri” command., so this news could be announced at WWDC 2023 and debut on the market together with the new version of the iPhone operating system, next September. This would suggest that the complexity of dealing with the false positive issue we already told you about when we first learned about this change would be resolved sooner than expected.

With this change, Apple aims to make interacting with Siri easier. Currently, and although this is not the model that was originally planned, many users invoke the assistant with the traditional “Hey Siri” and wait for the assistant to respond and make their request. With this change, Apple intends for users to make their requests all at once, in a single sentence. Something that can actually be done today, but maybe because of the conversational style of opening with a “Hello” it’s not used as regularly as they’d like.

Now it is still possible that the date originally proposed by Gurman is correct, since he confirms that this will happen with iOS 17, but does not specify whether it would be in the original version or whether, on the contrary, we will have to wait for the update itself, which may arrive during the first half of next year. And yes, It’s also unclear whether this change will hit multiple languages at the same time, or whether it’ll debut in English only. and we’ll have to wait for it to expand to other languages.
