Apple has announced a plan to reduce myopia or farsightedness with a daylight sensor and alerts to move the screen further from your eyes. At its annual WWDC on Monday, Apple unveiled features aimed at reducing eye strain in children, including a daylight sensor and notifications when you move the screen away from your eyes, Engadget reports.
The feature comes after Apple previewed additional health and accessibility features ahead of World Accessibility Awareness Day in May. While anyone can use these features, Apple said they are aimed at children, as farsightedness, commonly known as farsightedness, typically develops in childhood and affects about 30 percent of the U.S. population, according to the American Optometric Association.
At WWDC, Apple said that spending more time outside in daylight can help reduce a child’s risk of developing myopia. The new Apple Watch feature will use an ambient light sensor to measure how long the user spends outside. This data will be displayed in the Health app and Health Sharing for families, so parents and guardians can access children’s information without an iPhone.
Another attempt to reduce the risk of myopia is Apple’s new definition of screen distance. Screen Distance uses the camera technology behind Face ID in other Apple products to send an alert when a user gets too close to their screen.
The notification tells users to move the device as far away from their face as possible if they are holding it too close. According to Apple, all data in the Health app is encrypted, including vision updates for kids. These features will be available as part of watchOS 10.
