Google adds predictive text input to chat

Google’s Slack-like business app Chat, formerly known as Hangouts, is getting an online AI update, the company announced. Like Docs and Gmail, Google offers “smart input” that suggests relevant phrases in context as you type, effectively saving time by reducing repetitive typing. He says the company’s goal is to help you connect more quickly with colleagues “to advance conversations or projects more effectively.”

Google is known for having confusing communications in its messaging apps, so let’s remember that Chat was a corporate chat app that was initially promoted among various business offerings. It has similar features to the original Hangouts experience, but includes updates such as reactions and suggested replies. Although it is designed for businesses, it is also offered free of charge for individual users.

Google Chat, the Slack-like business app formerly known as Hangouts, gets an AI update

Earlier this year Chat got the Google Material Design treatment, bringing it closer to Gmail where it could be rolled out directly. Alongside new fonts, colors, panel sizes, and other aesthetic changes, Google introduced a new theme button designed to streamline project collaboration.

Chat has a lot in common with Gmail, so it makes sense to have smart compose in both apps. Google notes that it will be ON by default and can be turned off by unchecking “Enable predictive suggestions when you create posts on web and desktop” under Smart Typing. As mentioned, the update is only available for the web version – now rolling out to quick release domains, others coming June 26.
