Two years ago, Android 12 made the transition from Material Designing to Material You. Choosing to give a common style to the entire system, from a recognizable icon format to a consistent color palette and simplification of elements, is nothing less than a change in the system’s design language. And this is in the latest Google Photos update something that is obvious.

Where we can see how the application is in version 6.38 settings are now much more intuitive by collecting available options in fewer panels. It’s a change that isn’t publicly visible yet, but will gradually reach everyone who’s on that release.

Little but self

Architect Mies Van der Rohe is believed to be the author of “Less is more” (“less is more”), and the truth is, he couldn’t be more right in such contexts. We can’t say that Google Photos has been a complex application historically, but we can say that: your settings are too bad and in these latest versions it is incompatible with the idea of Material You.

However, it got a makeover in the last update and now we see how. They are divided into six sections, so intuitive that we know we will always find ourselves in them. They also add an icon to the left for better reference if possible.

Google Photos settings before (left) and then (right)

In the previous image you can see how these settings were ordered before and how they are now ordered in these blocks;

  • Copy: All settings related to backing up photos and videos to Google cloud.
  • Notifications: configuration regarding the type of notifications we want to receive from the application.
  • Preferences: Options to group photos with similar faces, memories and photo grid playback.
  • Shared: all settings related to sharing an album with other people.
  • Apps and devices: options to see which devices the photos are on, the possibility of freeing up the space that the photos occupy on that device, and even the possibility of transferring some of these photos to the SD card of the terminal (if available).
  • Privacy: everything related to the privacy parts of the app like location permissions or privacy when sharing content.

As we said before, If it still doesn’t work, be patient. Even with the latest 3.8 version of the app, we have verified for ourselves how this new settings menu looks on some devices and the old one on others. It will take a few days for everything to appear updated.
