In the post, the developer and publisher of the game indicated the little-known studio Giantscraft, which has only this project in its arsenal. Immediately afterwards, Giantscraft was harassed by far-right organizations, which the source calls “fascists”. According to the information obtained, the site associated with the publishing house was taken over by trolls and then turned into a page promoting Spanish imperialism.
A web search for “Giantscraft” will only show the Instagram page. Ecumene does not appear on Aztec, but there is a link to Giantscraft.com. If you follow this link, you’ll see almost nothing: it’s a minimalist page with a picture of the Burgundian serrated cross and a quote attributed to Hernán Cortés, one of the conquerors responsible for destroying Tenochtitlan and enslaving its inhabitants.
The page also links to another Instagram page filled with various 4chan-style memes glorifying Spanish imperialism. According to a post on this page, Giantscraft, The studio “forgot to refresh the site’s domain”, which the trolls take advantage of.
The Verge contacted Giantscraft and its publishers. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that they have been “attacked by far-right groups since the announcement” and that the domain was seized shortly after Aztec’s announcement. Journalists also talk about “obvious death threats” to developers.
As it is now known, The company did not intend to continue its domain. The developer was changing name when it fell into the hands of unknown far-right trolls and now has a new official site, Ecumenegames.com.
It is unclear whether the company has suffered any reputational damage as a result of this situation. It is unlikely that many people will hear of it. The game itself received mixed reviews. Many criticize it for its stereotypical portrayal of the Aztecs, which often goes against the true story.
