Cyber security is a far-reaching and important topic that is receiving increasing (media) attention. Yet we expose ourselves to the consequences of cybercrime on a daily basis by clicking on phishing links, not updating, taking full advantage of cracked passwords and neglecting two-factor authentication. How do we achieve actual behavior change?

This is one of the topics that Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist at G DATA, talks to Ulrich Seldeslachts, CEO of the organization LSEC (Leaders In Security), in the latest episode of the My Precious Data podcast series.

hold knowledge together

LSEC was founded at the University of Leuven more than twenty years ago when the accumulated expertise in the field of security threatened to end up on separate islands of knowledge. LSEC arose simply out of the need to protect and consolidate the available knowledge. Twenty years later, a lot has changed, but essentially this is still LSEC’s job: connecting and merging different domains within the security network.

LSEC connects security industry professionals, research institutes and universities, government agencies, end users and technical experts driving national and European research agendas.

According to Seldeslachs, it is about more than just security, it is about digitization. LSEC therefore not only organizes events (more than 100 per year), but also supports startups in the development of innovations and helps companies to better differentiate themselves from the competition. Or, to put it in Seldeslacht’s words: “It’s not just about pulling the cart, it’s also about pushing the cart.”

Shared Responsibility

In their conversation, Willems and Seldeslachs conclude that there is a constant need to innovate and anticipate possible new challenges. And this isn’t just the job of security organizations, governments, or end users: it’s a shared responsibility.

Listen to the full conversation between Willems and Seldeslachts, including what kind of two-factor authentication is best and how Seldeslachts protects his own email domain name. You can find the My Precious Data podcast at the following locations:
