Apple announced at the opening of WWDC23 that iPadOS 17 will support external webcams and microphones. Users will be able to connect an iPad (equipped with a USB-C port) to the Studio Display and use its built-in webcam and microphone, a novelty that will certainly enhance the use of Apple’s tablet.

However, support for webcams and external microphones in iPadOS 17 goes beyond Studio Display integration. Apple showed that Any webcam or USB-C (or USB-A, with adapter) camera can be used with iPad.. With this update, users will no longer need to install third-party drivers to use these accessories as they would on a Mac.

This feature will also be useful to developers who will be able to use it in their applications through the AVFoundation API. With expanded support, apps will be able to rotate video from external and built-in cameras, allow users to select audio input, enable echo cancellation optimizations, and more.

Current support only works for FaceTime, but Apple plans to expand support for other apps. This will be especially useful for apps like Zoom or Microsoft Teams that can take advantage of the new camera options.

Users will be able to use the capture card to stream content.

The news doesn’t stop there. Users will be able to use the Elgato HD60S+ USB Capture Card to stream content from a game console or any HDMI device into a FaceTime call. This will greatly enhance the mobile streaming experience on the iPad, especially as apps like Twitch and YouTube have been updated to support the new external camera feature.

Apple is currently testing iPadOS 17 with a beta available immediately for free to registered developers. The iPadOS 17 public beta will be available in July, ahead of its final release this fall, meaning the new version of the operating system will arrive later this year.
