iPads with USB-C port get support for external webcams

Apple’s latest iPadOS 17 beta has added support for various USB webcams, cameras that connect to the company’s tablets via devices like Elgato’s Cam Link 4K, and mirrorless cameras with webcam mode. However, this feature will only be available on iPads with a USB-C port.

Twitter user Stephen Robles demonstrated USB webcam support on the iPad, noting that it currently only works in FaceTime, as there is a new core API in iPadOS 17. USB cameras and webcams.

Another Twitter user, Brian Voll, discovered that the Elgato HD60S+ capture card can be used to stream content from a game console or any device with an HDMI port to a FaceTime call. When apps like Twitch and YouTube get support for this external camera feature, it will turn the iPad into a mobile streaming device.

The main problem is that this option only works on iPads with a USB-C port. Apple confirmed during a developer presentation that any USB camera will work on a plug-and-play basis. The company has not released any details about compatibility, but USB 3.0 and above devices are expected to work properly.

Like iOS 17, the beta version of iPadOS 17 is now available to developers, and a public beta will be available later this year.
