Pope Francis meets “Well, I woke up and realized” after an operation for a hernia in the abdomen, which he underwent this Wednesday at the Romana Gemelli hospital, surgeon Sergio Alfieri said at a press conference.

“Firstly, everything is fine with dad, I think this is the news that we have all been waiting for. He’s fine, awake, conscious and all he joked ten minutes agothe doctor said at a press conference unprecedented for Francisco’s pontificate.

Francisco, 86, had to have an operation for a hernia of the abdomen to avoid intestinal obstruction and obligatory general anesthesia. The Prefecture of the Papal Court, which deals with his agenda, today canceled all events of Francis until June 18.

Specifically, a laparotomy was performed on an incisional abdominal hernia, likely resulting from surgeries that Francisco had undergone in the past, due to the risk that it could cause intestinal obstruction.

Alfieri explained that the pontiff had undergone surgery for peritonitis and other problems, “possibly” in his country, Argentina, which left him with “adhesions” or internal scars in his intestines.

It caused the symptoms “painfully and increasingly” and with this operation, these internal scars and their transit were “released”, healing them.

“The pathology for which he was operated on today is benign, he must do the postoperative period, but once it’s discharged, it won’t leave any traces or worries” said the surgeon.

This is the third time the Pope has been admitted to a Roman hospital, having spent three nights in the Gemelli hospital in Rome with “acute pneumonia” at the end of March.

Francisco also underwent colon surgery for diverticula at the same hospital on July 4, 2021, removing 33 centimeters of bowel and was discharged ten days later, followed by a slow recovery.

Alfieri, who also performed this colon surgery, wanted to clarify “once and for all” that the disease was also “benign” and “completely curable.”

“Dad has no other illnesses”he assured.

On the other side, He denied that Francisco had problems with general anesthesia.

“The Holy Father never had a problem with general anesthesia, not two years ago, nor today. It is clear that no one likes to be operated on or sleep, because at that moment we lose consciousness, in this sense they do not like to sleep, but there were no problems, ”he said.

The dad also suffers from a problem with his right knee that requires him to walk with a cane or in a wheelchair, and he has repeatedly stated that he does not want to have surgery.

The Argentine pontiff must remain in the hospital in peace, but then “You will be able to lead a normal life.”

Holy See spokesman Matteo Bruni described the operation as “successful”.

The doctor emphasized the good mood of Jorge Bergoglio and confirmed that, having woken up during the operation, he ironically asked him: “When will we do the third operation?”
