There is a new feature in WhatsApp: Channels. Through this feature, users can follow news updates, sports scores, or see news from governments, organizations, and brands.

Meta proposes a brand new feature in WhatsApp. Channels is a feed in which various organizations, brands and government services provide their followers with news, videos, polls or, for example, photos.

Facebook 2.0

The new function appears under a new tab: Updates (we thought about the name). In it you will find the “Status” option and the latest messages from the accounts you follow.

The concept is a bit reminiscent of timelines found in other social media, but followers cannot react to the content posted in it. With everything that’s happening on Twitter, Meta seems to be trying to fill in some of the pit left by Elon Musk’s antics; There are some organizations that are no longer feeding the Blue Bird and are looking for another channel to share updates and news. With over 2.4 billion users, WhatsApp isn’t a bad option if this new feature catches on.

Another similarity to certain social media is that Meta does see benefits in payment services and channel monetization. The possibility of promoting your channel will also be checked.

You can find your favorite channels using a search function or by browsing a specially designed repository. A third option is an invite link via email or in your chat messages.

privacy

The updates in channels are not end-to-end encrypted, they are more like WhatsApp business messages in that respect. Meta is considering encrypting a number of channels, such as those of medical organizations and non-profit organizations, in the long term.

Further measures have been taken in terms of data protection: information from admins is not visible on the different channels, the post history goes back only thirty days and it is possible for admins to block screenshots and forward updates. In addition, these administrators decide who can follow their channel and whether their channel can be found in this repository at all.

By the way, if you follow a channel, your phone number will not be displayed to the admins or other followers.

It remains a cautious start for now, with Kanalen now only available in Colombia and Singapore. It has not been announced when Europe or specifically Belgium or the Benelux countries will be next.

WhatsApp hasn’t stood still lately. It was recently revealed that the platform is working on several business features and the ability to share a screen during a call, and meanwhile makes every user happy with the ability to edit messages.
