The biofuel was developed by the owners of dairy farms in the state of Michigan. It is made from milk permeate, which is a byproduct of milk filtration.
The filtrate contains lactose as well as vitamins and minerals. It can be processed into low carbon ethyl alcohol.
This kind of bioethanol can be used as fuel for internal combustion gasoline engines. It is suitable for both cars and trucks, and the exhaust from this fuel contains very few harmful substances.
American farmers have signed an agreement with the Canadian Dairy Distillery to build a large plant to convert milk spill into bioethanol. The enterprise will be able to produce 8.3 million liters of fuel per year.
