Three months have passed since then This has been officially confirmed Meta was preparing a service to compete with Twitterr. Something that I will develop a little later seems to me already incomprehensible, but completely legitimate. It was then that we learned that the internal name of this project was Meta P92 and that they were considering using a decentralized model for the design of the platform, similar to the one used by Mastodon, an eternal alternative to the little bird’s social network. More specifically, according to information that surfaced at the time, we learned that both networks, Meta P92 and Mastodon, will agree to use the “Activity Pub” protocol.

We were also able to connect this information with an important fact and it was the then very imminent arrival of the Notes feature on Instagram, with which users of the mentioned social network can share very short posts of a maximum of 60 characters. A format that would come to reproduce, but in an extreme way, the model of Twitter in its early years, when the maximum size of tweets was 140 characters, by providing size compatibility with SMS messages, which were still widely used at the time.

The fact that this feature debuted on Instagram in December of last year and that a few months later it was known that Meta was preparing its own Twitter already made us think that even if the project is integrated with all the company’s services, Instagram should play a particularly important role at the birth and implementation of this future service. And according to new information that has been leaked, it seems that we were not wrong.

As we can read in The Verge, internal name is Project 92 (hence P92) a its name could be Threads, according to peer-reviewed publication documents. And thanks to a leak made by a company employee, We can already see the first images of its design. A design that is undoubtedly very reminiscent of Twitter, confirming that Meta really wants to largely replicate both the look and feel of this future service.

This also proved to be the case The goal would be to negotiate with relevant personalities to become users of Project 92. This is quite logical, since managing to get certain public figures can be a great hook for many potential users to be encouraged to try Project 92. Two names mentioned by the mentioned medium are Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama, although we can understand that the list is much wider and more heterogeneous.

Regarding the relationship between Threads and Instagram, Meta’s response on Twitter (this is how the movement was described in the event dedicated to Project 92, from which the images also came) will use the Instagram account system to automatically fill in all information about these users who decide to make the leap from one social network to another. Another smart move as it will make registration much easier… although it remains to be seen how this will fit into the current dispute between Meta and the European Union.

Be that as it may, as I’ve said before, I think Meta has all the legitimacy in the world to create a service that borrows many of Twitter’s key elements. And because? Because This movement has been going in the opposite direction for years. Recall that in its early days, Twitter was an extremely simple and limited network, while Facebook offered endless features and very few restrictions. However, over time, Twitter has been adding many features that were typical of Facebook. So the fact that Meta now wants to turn the tables, and that he is doing it by taking advantage of Instagram’s good positions, especially among the youngest, seems logical, fair and a potential success.
