Orange Belgium yesterday gathered the press for a major event at Palais 12 in Brussels. The telecom operator therefore has big plans. With the acquisition of Voo, Orange seems more ready than ever to take on Proximus and Telenet. In addition to the expansion of the 5G network, Orange also wants to focus on fixed-line Internet for consumers and companies.
The announcement of a new generation of Livebox modems fits the latter goal. The modem was developed by the French company Vantiva. The third generation Livebox supports Docsis 3.1, which enables “multi-gigabit internet”. The built-in Ethernet port supports a theoretical speed of up to 2.5 Gbit/s and also WiFi 6. The connectivity can be expanded with the EasyMesh technology and the WiFi Booster.
A new modem also requires new Internet formulas. From June 2023, Orange customers can choose between three different Internet speeds: Standard (150 Mbit/s), Boost (400 Mbit/s for €15/month extra) and Boost Giga (1 Gbit/s for €25/month extra). Orange hopes to be able to offer 1 Gbit/s plans to 95 percent of residential and business customers across Belgium by 2024.
It will not remain so in the long run. Orange is also looking to 2040 and aims to roll out 10 Gbps. It wants to achieve this via HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) with the latest Docsis technology (Docsis 4.0), but also via its own network and that of partners via fiber optics. Telenet and Proximus are also busy increasing their internet speeds to 10 Gbit/s.
