Google Drive is gradually phasing out unsupported versions of Windows. The 32-bit version of Windows 10 is no longer welcome either.

Windows 8 has been among the obsolete browsers since January, but that hasn’t stopped some brave ones from continuing to use the operating system. But Google is also pushing for a more modern version. The Google Drive desktop app will no longer work on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 starting this summer.

The web version of Google Drive will remain generally available, but syncing between the web and desktop apps will be discontinued in August. Additionally, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a browser that still works on a Windows 8 device. Chrome and Edge stopped supporting them a while ago. Firefox gives users until September 2024. As a macOS user, you need at least version 10.15.7 to continue using the Drive app.

It is noticeable that Windows 10 is also included in the list of browsers that are no longer preferred by Google Drive. Support ends sometime in the second half of the year, with no clarity as to whether it will end in summer, fall, or winter. For clarification: This only affects the 32-bit version, Google has not had any problems with 64-bit Windows so far. But these are the first signs that Windows 10 will not last forever either.

The 64-bit version uses memory more efficiently by dividing it into 64 “boxes” instead of 32. Windows 11 is still only offered in 64-bit.
