Technology giants Apple, Google and Microsoft announced the creation of a password-free login for all controlled mobile, desktop and browser platforms. Instead of passwords, they plan to introduce FIDO technology in 2023.

This means that passwordless authentication will appear on all major platforms:

  • Android and iOS mobile operating system
  • Chrome, Edge and Safari browsers
  • desktop and macOS

Authentication in apps, sites and other digital services will be performed using a smartphone. Google detailed the process in a statement released this Thursday.

To access web services, simply unlock the phone in any way – by entering a PIN, graphic key, FaceID or fingerprint. Authentication will be performed by a unique encryption token called an “access key” shared by the phone and the site.

Users do not need to memorize multiple login settings or compromise security by using the same passwords in multiple locations. This would make it much more difficult for hackers to gain access to accounts and phishing attacks, as a physical device is required to log in.

Cross-platform operation of passwordless login will be provided by the FIDO standard, which uses the public key encryption policy. The user will be able to hold a unique, FIDO compliant key and present it to the website for authentication only when the phone is unlocked. If your phone is suddenly lost, you can easily sync the access keys with your new device via cloud backup.
