According to a study carried out maccafee, the world leader in online advocacy, 30% of men intend to use AI tools to express their romantic feelings. This statistic worries experts, as 67% of adults can’t tell the difference between a love letter written by a machine and a letter written by a human.

A research report called “Modern Love” by McAfee surveyed 5,000 people in nine countries, including Brazil. The results show that 31% of all adults, 36% of men and 26% of women, are planning or are already using AI to improve their profiles on dating apps. This emergence of artificial intelligence in the world of online dating is raising concerns about romance fraud, with half of adults (51%) claiming to have been lied to or know someone who has.

While the idea of ​​using an AI tool like ChatGPT, writing a love letter may seem attractive, it is a risky tactic. The study shows that 49% of respondents would be offended if they knew they had received a machine-generated message. Despite this, 27% of respondents said they would feel more confident using AI as a ghostwriter. Other reasons cited were lack of time (21%), lack of inspiration (21%) and practicality (10%) as they believe they won’t be discovered.

The debate about which romantic messages people or machines prefer is gaining momentum. Surprisingly, two-thirds of adults (67%) can’t tell the difference between an AI-written love letter and a human-written love letter. In addition, 65% of respondents said they preferred a typewritten letter in the style of E. E. Cummings to an original poem such as “I carry your heart” written by the recipient himself.

Faced with such a scenario, experts warn of increasing problems in determining the authorship of information received online, whether from a human or a machine. The popularity of artificial intelligence, especially tools available to anyone with a web browser, has increased significantly. Steve Grobman, CTO at McAfee, highlights the importance of monitoring potential malicious AI activity, especially on Valentine’s Day. The use of short phrases, the repetition of words, and any suspicious requests for money or information may indicate the presence of scammers. Grobman notes that you shouldn’t stop people from finding their perfect match, but it’s important to fall in love with someone real and not a scammer.
