Mobile operator lifecell is testing the first non-energy-independent base station in the Odesa region that can work even during a power outage.
This was announced in 2019 by Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister for Innovations, Education, Science and Technology Development – Minister of Digital Transformation. Telegram reports Ukrinform.
“The station was started by the lifecell mobile operator. It is powered by 7 solar cells: from the sun during the day, from the moon at night. This way, thousands of Ukrainians are connected to each other when there is no electricity. The station is currently in test mode. Engineers are monitoring the results and are currently satisfied with the quality of the work and uninterrupted communication,” he said. .
Fedorov added that telecom infrastructure specialists are actively preparing for the autumn-winter period. That is, more than 90% of the 34,000 base stations are equipped with batteries and about 10% are equipped with generators. Also, operators replace lead batteries with lithium batteries, so the connection is maintained longer in the absence of light.
As reported, since the start of all-out war in Ukraine, more than 3,000 mobile base stations of operators have been damaged and the industry has suffered about $2.5 billion. Some base stations located in unoccupied areas have been restored – they are already working.
