The United States and Iran are not discussing an interim nuclear deal, a US official said Monday, but Washington has briefed Tehran on the matter. steps that could provoke a crisis as well as those who could create a better climate between longtime antagonists.
“Negotiations on an interim agreement are not underway,” the US official said on condition of anonymity.
His comment went further than last week’s denial by the United States, which they described as “false and misleading” report that the countries were close to an interim agreement and said that reports of such an agreement were “false”, but did not deny the possibility of negotiations on one.
The official did not refute media reports of recent contacts between the United States and Iran, instead saying that speculation that they were about a temporary nuclear deal was inaccurate.
“We have made it clear to them what escalation measures they should avoid to avert a crisis, and what de-escalation measures they could take to create a more positive context,” he said, declining to elaborate but noting that Washington would like to see Iran’s further cooperation with the UN agency for nuclear supervision.
US and European officials have been looking for ways to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program after the breakdown last year of proxy talks between the US and Iran over a revival of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the major powers.
Although the US official declined to elaborate, the latest US messages to Iran appear to have been aimed at dealing with the aftermath.
The Biden administration has repeatedly stated that it will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon and that all options are on the table, which is diplomatic language for the possibility of a military strike.
