The European Commission’s investigation is nearing completion. While Europe was still negative about a takeover of VMware in April, according to Reuters, it is now tending towards a positive assessment. The European Commission intends to grant permission if Broadcom can meet certain conditions that have not yet been specified.
It’s been more than a year since Broadcom and VMware announced their acquisition. Broadcom is willing to pay $61 billion for the virtualization specialist in what would make the deal one of the biggest tech acquisitions ever. Logically, the news caused quite a stir.
For example, VMware employees are reportedly not exactly keen on welcoming Broadcom. They worry that the buyer may want to divest software products, tie them exclusively to Broadcom hardware, and/or raise prices. That fear is justified, as Broadcom has proven time and time again that it’s not afraid to put the blunt ax on acquired companies.
The European Commission will announce its final judgment in July. Antitrust investigations are also ongoing in the United Kingdom and the United States. Broadcom hopes not to have to delay the deadline again and to close the acquisition before the end of the fiscal year on October 31. We’re not there yet, but things are looking a little better.
