AMD introduces Ryzen Pro 7040 Mobile: integrated AI for enterprise laptops

AMD launches its Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 processors for enterprise laptops. The AMD Ryzen Pro 7040 Mobile comes with various management and security features tailored for businesses and has an integrated AI accelerator.

AMD introduces Ryzen Pro 7040 Mobile. This is a series of processors that functionally differ little from the classic Ryzen 7040 Mobile CPUs for laptops. However, the Pro label implies that the chips are equipped with additional security and management functions, which are particularly relevant in the corporate context.

Built-in AI chiplet

Like the non-Pro variants, the chips are based on TSMC’s 4 nm baking process and rely on the Zen 4 architecture. The integrated graphics functions come from an RDNA 3 chiplet. AMD also installs its Ryzen AI accelerator in the CPUs. This XDNA architecture chiplet can handle AI workloads more efficiently than other chip components. AMD assumes that the demand for such efficient AI functions will increase. The chip designer works with Microsoft, among others, to use the capabilities of Ryzen AI effectively.

AMD is presenting a total of six new mobile chips from the Ryzen Pro 7040 Mobile series. The strongest component has eight cores on board, which is enough for sixteen threads, and comes with a maximum clock speed of 5.2 GHz. The range consists of both more powerful but less efficient “HS” chips and more efficient “U” chips for Ultrabooks.

CPU cores / threads boost frequency fundamental frequency Cache (MB) TDP GPU Ryzen AI
Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS 8/16 5.2GHz 4.0GHz 24MB 35-54W Radeon 780M Yes
Ryzen 7 Pro 7840HS 8/16 5.1GHz 3.8GHz 24MB 35-54W Radeon780M Yes
Ryzen 5 Pro 7640HS 6/12 5.0GHz 4.3GHz 22MB 35-54W Radeon 760M Yes
Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U 8/16 5.1GHz 3.3GHz 24MB 15-28 w Radeon 780M Yes
Ryzen 5 Pro7640U 6/12 4.9GHz 3.5GHz 22MB 15-28 w Radeon 760M Yes
Ryzen 5 Pro 7540U 6/12 4.9GHz 3.2GHz 22MB 15-28 w Radeon 740M NO

Also for the desktop

AMD takes the opportunity to dock three new Ryzen Pro chips for the desktop. These processors are more powerful and also have the same management functions as other Pro chips.

CPU cores / threads thrustfrequency fundamental frequency Cache (MB) TDP GPU model
Ryzen 9 PRO 7945 24.12 5.4GHz 3.7GHz 76MB 65W Radeon graphics
Ryzen 7 PRO 7745 8/16 5.3GHz 3.8GHz 40MB 65W Radeon graphics
Ryzen 5 PRO 7645 6/12 5.1GHz 3.8GHz 38MB 65W Radeon graphics

With the Pro chips, laptop manufacturers can build enterprise models of their laptops around AMD CPUs. The Pro label is essentially the counterpart of vPro at Intel. For smaller SMEs or individual users, “Pro” does not really add value. It’s not that a chip without a “Pro” label isn’t fit for professional use.
