ABOUT Stockholm Museum of Technology in Sweden surprises visitors with a new addition to its collection: sculpture entirely created by artificial intelligence (AI). Named “Impossible statue“, the work is the result of the collaboration of five different masters who could never work together in real life, such as Michelangelo, Rodin and Takamura.
Sandvik, the company responsible for the project, used three different AI programs to realize this unique piece of art. Made of stainless steel, the sculpture is 150 centimeters high and weighs an impressive 500 kilograms. Depicting a woman, the work represents the lower half of the body covered with what appears to be a tunic, and in her left hand she holds a bronze globe.
The purpose of this creation was to combine the styles of five famous sculptors who marked their time: Michelangelo, Auguste Rodin, Kate Kollwitz, Kotaro Takamura and Augusta. “Something about its appearance makes you feel like it wasn’t man-made,” says Julia Alderius, the museum’s director of innovation.
By observing the sculpture, the viewer can identify the Michelangelo-inspired musculature, while the hand refers to Takamura’s creations. To achieve this result, Sandvik engineers loaded into the program a wide selection of images of sculptures created by these artists. The AI then created several 2D renderings that Alderius said captured the essence and style of each of these sculptors.

Creativity, concept, art and design
“These 2D images were incorporated into a 3D model by our engineers, after which we focused on production.” explains Lunde, a spokesman for the company.
Director of Innovation Alderius considers sculpture to be a true art form and believes that the evaluation of this work should be determined by the public. She also expresses optimism about the popularization of AI in the arts.

“There is no reason to be afraid of what AI can do for creativity, concept, art and design.“, he claims. “We just need to adapt to a new future where technology is prominent in creativity and design.“
With the exhibition of this groundbreaking work, the Stockholm Museum of Technology demonstrates the ongoing interplay between art and technology, and paves the way for discussions about the impact of AI on contemporary art production. Visitors have the opportunity to contemplate this unique sculpture and reflect on the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents to the art world.
