Per broadband connection, consumption per month increased to 251 GB in 2022 and Belgium passed the milestone of 5 million fixed broadband subscriptions.
New figures from the Belgian telecoms regulator BIPT show that Belgians are using more and more data over the fixed network. In 2022 we downloaded an average of 251 GB per month per connection, more than 14 GB more than in 2021. The end of 2022 passed the milestone of 5 million fixed broadband connections, eight years after the previous milestone of 4 million connections. According to BIPT, growth is slowing. Annual net additions were 94,000 compared to 212,000 in 2021.
If we take a look at the mobile Internet, the consumption per month is also increasing there. In 2022, mobile data consumption per active data SIM card averaged 6.1 gigabytes per month, in 2021 it was 4.9 gigabytes per month. Most data is consumed over 4G networks. Data usage over 3G halved to 0.2 GB per month. Due to limited nationwide 5G coverage, 5G usage is also capped at 1.1GB per month.
Only Orange gained market share in 2022 (+0.7 percentage points). [10-20]%), both Telenet (-0.3 percentage points up [30-40]%) than Proximus (-0.1 percentage points up [40-50]%) lost market share despite the latter taking Mobile Vikings under its wing. The number of fixed-line broadband subscribers continues to grow, while television and fixed-line telephony continue to lose ground.
Fiberglass in Belgium
Both Telenet and Proximus made significant investments in 2022 to accelerate fiber optic expansion. You can follow the current progress on the BIPT fiber map. For example, the switch from copper and cable to fiber in Belgium will cost a total of more than 11 billion euros over a period of 10 to 15 years.
This is essential to further increase the connectivity of 1 gigabit, which is necessary to reach the EU targets (gigabit for all by 2030).
