Construction of a new third launch complex has begun in the city of Wenchang, in southern China’s Hainan Province, where the country’s first spaceport for commercial space launches is being built.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by CGTN, citing the official Wechat account of the China Space News Agency (China Space News, CSN).
In May, the main tower of the first launch complex was erected on this large-scale launch site, and facilities for the second are actively being built.
The third complex is planned to be built in 180 days from the platform where solid propellant carrier rockets will be launched. In particular, it will include an energy center and several buildings used for pre-launch testing of launch vehicles and spacecraft, wastewater treatment, and storage of equipment needed to launch rockets into space.
The new launch complex is set to expand the Wenchang Space Port’s ability to launch special launch vehicles amid the anticipated high demand for commercial spaceflight in China and the world in general.
Construction of a large-scale launch site in Hainan province began in July 2022, and its first rocket is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2024. Once the spaceport is operational, it will not only provide commercial spacecraft launch services to Chinese customers, but also accept orders from overseas.
As Ukrinform reports, the Chinese Space Agency is developing a next-generation spacecraft that can carry seven astronauts on board.
