Stack Overflow’s annual survey found that developers are ready to embrace AI but are far from fully confident in the technology.

Q&A site Stack Overflow conducted its annual poll last month and the results are in. This shows that many developers are now willing to use artificial intelligence. However, trust in the technology is significantly lower.

Some numbers

More than three quarters of the 90,000 respondents worldwide (185 countries) are positive about the use of artificial intelligence in their work processes. Seventy percent are already using AI coding tools or plan to use them in the near future. Standout benefits include increased productivity (33 percent) and faster learning (a quarter of respondents).

This readiness seems to be more of a must as these percentages are in stark contrast to the numbers in terms of perception. Only 3 percent have high levels of trust in AI coding tools, and 39 percent tend to trust them. Almost a quarter of respondents find the technology somewhat unreliable and five percent find the tools very unreliable. Almost a third of the respondents had no opinion.

Other results

The top three AI search systems are dominated by ChatGPT. A full 83 percent of those surveyed use the popular OpenAI bot. On stage, he is supported by Bing AI and WolframAlpha.

The most commonly used developer search engine is GitHub Copilot, followed by Tabnine and AWS CodeWhisperer.

Respondents who said they learned to code were more open to AI tools than those who identified as professional developers (82 versus 70 percent).

For personal use

Stack Overflow will use the results of this research to develop its own approach to AI. The company is already investing in artificial intelligence and plans to integrate generative AI tools into its systems.

This will not be an easy task, as the platform’s moderators are currently on strike because AI content is being produced as answers on the platform. Something the company has been working on for a while.

Stack Overflow’s last major survey took place late last year.
