Many of us have had problems connecting to Wi-Fi at some point and the truth is that Even if it doesn’t seem like it, it’s completely normal. Because, after all, this type of connection depends on many factors, and this means that the risk of something failing is quite high.

For example, imagine that you might have Wi-Fi problems due to a simple outage from your carrier, a faulty update that affects your router, your computer, or other devices you’re trying to connect from, and even for something as simple as distance or interference at home or in the office.

  1. Total link loss: This usually happens for two reasons, due to a failure of our carrier or a bug that affects the router, the device we are trying to connect from, or both. In most cases, this is resolved by restarting the router (unplug the power for 60 seconds and plug it back in) as well as restarting the smartphone, computer or device you are trying to connect from.
  2. Slow Wi-Fi connection: This problem is usually caused by network saturation or being far from the signal source. Closing applications that consume bandwidth and get close to the router can solve the problem. Using a faster standard such as Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 can also help us, and in those cases where we cannot get close to the router, it would be ideal to extend the range of the signal with a Wi-Fi repeater.
  3. a connection that comes and goes: It happens when we have connections at specific times but then lose them and can recover them after a while. In these cases, the problem may come from the router itself, usually because the signal doesn’t reach where we are, although it could also be due to an underlying error in the router and the device we’re trying to connect from. Go closer to the router to see if the problem is gone and if not, reboot the router and the device.
  4. I can’t connect to Wi-Fi: It is a problem that also tends to occur with some frequency and in most cases the fault is in the device from which we are trying to connect, although it can also be in the distance if we are very far from the router. In that case, if you are very far away, try moving closer to the router or connecting to the 2.4 GHz band, which has a longer range. You can also make the device forget the network and try to connect again. If none of that works, reboot your device and router.
  5. Poorly functioning and unstable Wi-Fi: It is one of the most annoying problems because we have an internet connection but it doesn’t work well at all. Normally, it is usually a problem with the location of the router, either because it is very far from where we connect to the Internet, or because it is surrounded by obstacles and sources of interference. The ideal solution would be to better adapt the location of the router and bring it to a central area, slightly elevated and free of obstacles.
