If you have some mechanical skills, you can now repair a defective Surface device yourself by ordering official replacement parts from Microsoft.
Microsoft has started selling official replacement parts for Surface hardware on its own website. This allows owners to conveniently repair defective parts themselves, including the screen, SSD, battery, webcam and more.
The manufacturer supplies everything you need for the replacement, except for the tool. Microsoft has been working with the specialist iFixit since 2021 to buy official parts this way and recommends buying the tools there if you don’t have everything in-house.
A comprehensive spare parts list is not available for every device. The newer the device, the greater the range of spare parts. On the Surface Pro 7, for example, we only find parts to repair the stand. Newer devices provide access to many more components, including USB ports, speakers, WiFi, and thermal modules.
Prices vary widely from 2,159 euros for replacing the large Surface Studio 2 screen to 155 euros for the rear camera, 124 euros for speakers and 63 euros for the thermal module. All prices include VAT. The full list can be found here.
Microsoft will initially offer the service in France, Canada and the United States. Trading partners can also sell official spare parts themselves in these countries. It is not yet clear when Microsoft will expand this service to other European countries.
