At least 15 people have died in the Canadian province Manitoba after a semi-trailer truck collided with a small bus carrying a group of mostly elderly people, local police said.

The accident is one of the deadliest in recent Canadian history. For its part, the Winnipeg Free Press reported that the victims were on their way to a local casino.

“We were able to determine that at least 15 people were killed in this clash,” said Deputy Commissioner Rob Hill, commander of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba.

Hill said at a televised press conference that “Unfortunately, this day in Manitoba and across Canada will be remembered as a day of tragedy and great sadness.”

There were about 25 people on the bus, mostly elderly.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the accident, which occurred at the junction of two major highways near the town of Carberry in southwestern Manitoba, 170 kilometers west of Winnipeg, “incredibly tragic” news.

“I express my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones today, and I think of those who have suffered. I can’t imagine the pain the victims are experiencing,” he said.
