The US Department of Energy and several other organizations were affected by a massive hacking attack by Russian hackers who exploited a vulnerability in the software responsible for transferring files.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters with reference to representatives of the US administration.
“Data at two Department of Energy’s facilities were affected when hackers gained access through a vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer program,” the message said.
We’re talking about agencies in the state of New Mexico that dispose of nuclear waste for defensive purposes, according to a source at the Department of Justice.
In addition, attacks British energy giant Shell, Georgia State University, Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System were affected.
The Russian-linked blackmail hacker group Cl0p claimed responsibility. In their statement, they said they would not use any data received from government agencies and allegedly deleted it.
As reported, similar attacks have previously been carried out against all organizations whose systems have been compromised through the MOVEit Transfer software in the US, UK and other countries. In these cases, hackers also exploited a vulnerability in the software that its manufacturer Progress Software (PRGS.O) discovered and officially announced late last month.
