During the meeting, Xi described Gates as an “old friend” and expressed hope that they could engage in joint activities that benefit both China and the United States.

The meeting took place at the Diaoyutai government hostel in Beijing. Xi described Gates as the first American friend he met this year.

“I often say that the foundation of US-Chinese relations lies in their people. The President of the People’s Republic of China said, “I put my hope in the American people.”

In response, Gates said he was honored to have the opportunity to meet Xi. “We’re going to have some very important issues to discuss today,” he said.

The last meeting between Xi and Gates took place in 2015 at the Boao Forum in Hainan Province.

notedXi said during the meeting that China is ready to work with the world on global challenges, including technological innovation and pandemic prevention.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Qin Gang were also present at the meeting.

Reportedly, co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates arrived in China for the first time since 2019 and was due to meet with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping in Beijing on June 16.
