Among the many platforms that will emerge with Twitter to mail Another contender for the title. The long-awaited launch of the platform on iOS devices took place last Thursday. Billed as a revolutionary social media news consumption platform, Post aims to redefine how people stay informed online. The app offers users three different channels: Follow, Discover and News, the latter being the center of the app.
In the News tab, users can access a selection of articles compiled by Post’s respected publishing partners, including key publications such as Reuters, Los Angeles Times, Wired, Yahoo Finance, Fortune, Insider, NBC News and more. While the titles and opening fragments of the articles are available for free, readers must perform a microtransaction using “scores” to unlock the entire widget in the app.
It is important to note that these articles are not paid content from the publishers’ own sites. In most cases, readers can access them by visiting publishers’ platforms. However, for those seeking the convenience of ad-free in-app reading without intrusive pop-ups, the option to pay for content may be tempting.
Publishers currently receive 100% of the revenue from these micropayments, but this arrangement may change in the near future as Post seeks profitability to keep the platform up and running. Current funding for the platform is provided by Andreessen Horowitz and Scott Galloway, professors and authors of marketing at New York University.
The number of points required to unlock an article depends on the publisher. The most affordable in-app action is 300 points for $4.29. Articles start from just one point and the highest value is around 29 points. Thus, readers can expect to pay only a few cents for most articles, with a maximum cost of around 40 cents. Users also have the option to tip publishers or creators to appreciate their work.
Just eight months after its launch, Post has managed to amass an impressive user base of over 440,000 people. As the app continues to grow and gain momentum, social news remains an exciting prospect in the consumption landscape. In the past weeks, we’ve heard reports that a large number of Twitter alternatives are being developed. Only time will tell if Post will become a true successor to Twitter and revolutionize the way we consume news today.
