Octopuses are highly intelligent creatures; so clever that some scientists believe octopuses are aliens. But now these curious creatures have done something incredible; They built huge cities on the coast of eastern Australia.

These cities are impressive not only for their creation, but also for changing what we know about octopuses. First, these tentacled creatures were always thought to be solitary, and jokes were made that when two octopuses first met, they would mate or eat each other.

But with this new discovery, scientists have discovered that octopuses can not only build their own little city, but also love to group up in the ocean. The researchers who made the discovery say the octopuses used rock outcrops and piles of shells to build their small cities. The first spot was seen in 2009 in Jervis Bay, an area off the east coast of Australia. The location was described in a 2009 document.

The scientists who discovered the place named it Octopolis, and it turned out that at least 16 different animals interacted with the place. Just a few hundred meters away, another place called Octlantis was discovered. This settlement had 13 occupied octopus “houses” and ten more that were empty at the time.

Researchers dived into octopus cities using GoPro cameras to capture them. During filming, they recorded about 10 hours of footage in one day and simply watched how residents interacted with each other. This discovery is extremely intriguing and only serves to show how little we know about the wildlife that sees our oceans as our home.
